Applying for a Post Office Box

Feature Blog for on PO Boxes By Chisum Realty Group

Many potential home buyers in the Enchanted Circle are coming from a more populated area that offers curbside USPS mail pick-up and delivery. With the Enchanted Circle and most of New Mexico being fairly rural, USPS only makes pick-ups and deliveries at your local Post Offices in Angel Fire, Eagle Nest, Red River and parts of Taos. With that in mind, you might be wondering, how do I apply for a Post Office Box?

You can either apply online or in person the your local Post Office. Two current and valid forms of identification will be required. One must contain a photo, such as your driver’s license or passport. The other must prove your physical address, such as a current lease or mortgage or insurance policy. Social Security cards, credit cards, and birth certificates are not accepted.

You will then be asked to decide which size post office box you would like. There is a nominal fee depending on the size you choose. The smallest PO Box is 3” x 5.5” which is rather small, so larger items will not fit. When this is the case, the USPS staff will place a notification in your PO Box. You will then need to provide the USPS staff with this notification during business hours and they will give you your package. If going to the Post Office during business hours is difficult, you can apply for a larger PO Box which fits larger deliveries that you can pick up at your convenience. USPS will not except Fedex and UPS deliveries but don’t worry, both companies will deliver directly to your home.

You will also need to renew your PO Box annually. Once you are an established resident in the Enchanted Circle, renewing your PO Box can be difficult since much of your current mail will only have your PO Box on it. Your homeowner’s insurance policy or water bill are the most common items that would contain your physical street address. But when in doubt, the friendly Post Office staff will be happy to help you!

Hi Holly! UPS and FedEx will deliver to any address’s door but I’m afraid you’ll need a PO box to receive mail.
